Qualis Community Benefits Fund has granted £4,000 to a local charity helping young people in local schools deal with things like exam stress, bullying, friendship issues and problems settling at school

Talk2Nish Peer Mentors is a charity providing mental health support to young people across Epping and surrounding areas by training sixth formers and an adult coordinator to be mental health peer mentors to fellow students in their secondary school.

The grant will support four more rounds of training which costs £1,000 a time.

“Our aim is to build the active listening and leadership skills of our young mentors and build the confidence of mentees who are facing everyday challenges,” said Mandy Garner, coordinator and founder of Talk2Nish Peer Mentors.

“Beneficiaries are not only the mentors and mentees [around 50 per school] but also the whole school in that mentors do assemblies and other activities to raise awareness of mental health issues.

“Testimonials from mentors consistently highlight how they feel the skills they have learned are useful both in school and outside, helping them manage family and friendship issues better and giving them important capabilities which will stand them in good stead for the future.”
